Questions? Always! We often get people who are new to the Bed and Breakfast experience and are sometimes unsure of how the whole thing works. It’s not too difficult, and we just want you to be able to relax and enjoy yourselves when you stay with us. Maybe you’ll find some of your burning questions about what to do when you’re at a B and B answered here. In no particular order, these are some of our most frequently asked.
Q: What is it like to stay at a Bed and Breakfast?
It’s like staying at your favorite auntie’s house. She’s really, really glad to see you and wants to feed you and see that you have a great time away from home. And she never asks you to make your bed or take out the trash or clear your breakfast dishes. Hurray!
Q: What if I have a special diet or I don’t like the menu for tomorrow’s breakfast that is posted in the entry way?
A: No problem either way. We can accommodate most special diets with advanced notice. Just tell us when you make your reservation; it’s easy to fill in the information on line. Don’t care for the next day’s posted breakfast? I always ask our guests when they check in, so let me know then and we can decide on something you’ll enjoy.
Q: I noticed you have navy blue towels, some with the words “Makeup” embroidered on them. Should I use those to wash off cosmetics, or would it be better if I smeared my lipstick and foundation all over the white towels?
A: Ha ha, you kidder! Yes, please use the navy blue towels to remove cosmetics or to clean up extra-dirty jobs, as it’s very difficult, even with the invention of bleach, to remove makeup and other stains. Besides, guests are charged for damaged linens, and wouldn’t you want to spend your money a better way?
Q: Is there a certain time we have to be in before you lock the doors for the night?
A: Not at all. Your key locks and unlocks your room and opens the top lock of the main entry door. You can come and go as you please at any hour. We won’t tell mom.
Q: Check-in is 3-6pm. What if we can’t make it until after that time?
A: If it’s not too late, I’m usually here to greet you and show you to your room. If you know you’re going to be very late and I will have already removed my eye makeup, we can make arrangements for you to get your key to let yourself in. It’s pretty simple – we’ll talk or text.
Q: I was having a great time in the hot tub messing with the controls when I twisted a control really hard broke the handle right off! Later I spilled coffee all over the bedspread and hid the stain under a pillow. I was sure you wouldn’t notice or guess it was me. Was I right?
A: No. When we go in to clean the rooms, we usually notice things like broken hot tubs, coffee spills, or other things that might interfere with the next guest’s enjoyment of the space. The best thing to do is to tell us right away, or let us know when you check out. That way we can take care of the issue, and you don’t have to be scared.
Q: Is it better to make my reservation through sites like Expedia, Hotels, Home Away, etc., or to go directly through oldesquareinn.com? How can I save the most money?
A: You can always save more money when you book directly through us – either by making your reservation on line or giving us a call. Those sites are great ways to find a place when you’re not staying in Mount Joy enjoying Lancaster County, but you’re always better off when you can directly connect with the Bed and Breakfast or hotel.
Q: How can I receive the Olde Square Inn monthly newsletter so I can find out what’s going on before everyone else does?
A: Nothing to it. Just send me your email address with a line that says something like “Send me your newsletter, please!” and I’ll put you on the list.
Q: I don’t really have plans for the day and just wanted to hang out. Do I have to stay in my room?
A: Heck no! There lots of spaces to enjoy whether you want to read a book, do a puzzle, work on your current project, or think about your Next Big Idea. Come down to the living room where you can sit in front of the fire in winter and get some coffee or tea and a snack anytime.
You could get some fresh air on the side porch, or relax on the Grand Balcony, go to the back gardens, sit by the pool in the summer or take a walk around town. We also have short and long mapped hikes that originate from the Inn if you’re looking for a little exercise. Don’t forget about the fabulous restaurants within walking distance, right up and down the street.
If you’re ready to get out and do some sight-seeing, you’ll be happy to know we’re central to so many things that Lancaster County has to offer. Take a look through our brochures for some ideas, or let me help you plan your great day.
Well, did that help clear up any questions you might have had?
Maybe you still have some queries floating around in your head. Email me your wonderings – I’ll answer and then collect the Next Nine for a future post. I am so looking forward to hearing from you! Happy September!
